The Belt tensioner is a component that works in conjunction with the Serpentine or timing belt to ensure that everything in your engine works as it should. The tensioner ensures that the belt delivers enough tension while you’re driving, so that the belt can move the various pulleys that drive the engine components .

Timing pulleys are specialized pulleys that have either teeth or pockets around the outside diameter of the pulley body. Timing teeth engage holes in the metal belt, while timing pockets engage drive lugs on a belt's inner circumference. These teeth or pockets are used only for timing, not for power transmission .

Idler pulleys are engine pulleys that are responsible for guiding and tensioning the engine drive belts. The engine drive belts are routed in a specific manner around the various engine accessories, such as the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and AC compressor. The idler pulley is meant to provide another smoothly rotating point for the engine belt to loop around, so that the desired routing can be achieved. Most engines use one idler pulley, and one tensioner pulley, though some designs do use more than one idler .

Replacement interval: 

Belts tensioners and pulleys are subject to aging and wear. They therefore have to be regularly checked and replaced.

The checking and replacement intervals are always specified by the vehicle manufacturer and must be complied with.
